Подсказка обычно настраивается в PS1 переменная среды. PS2, PS3, и PS4 все используются в других местоположениях, и Вы могли бы хотеть изменить их в какой-то момент. Для получения намного более хорошей подсказки установите Ваш PS1 в Вашей оболочке запускают файлы, обычно ~/.bashrc:

export PS1='\$ '  # Note ' quotes rather than " quotes

Используя \$ изменит подсказку на # когда uid==0 - например:

$ sudo -s
# 
# exit
$ 

Очень полезная подсказка прежде, чем выполнить это rm -r * команда.

          \V     the release of bash, version + patch level
                 (e.g., 2.00.0)
          \w     the current working directory, with $HOME
                 abbreviated with a tilde (uses the value of
                 the PROMPT_DIRTRIM variable)
          \W     the basename of the current working
                 directory, with $HOME abbreviated with a
                 tilde
          \!     the history number of this command
          \#     the command number of this command
          \$     if the effective UID is 0, a #, otherwise a $
